WELCOME TO WESTWARD HO! TENNIS CLUB

Welcome to the website for Westward Ho! Tennis Club (affiliated to the LTA).

Westward Ho! Tennis Club was formed in july 1946. it moved to its current location in may 1973 thanks to the generosity of a local landowner called Dolly Knowles. The clubhouse was built almost single-handedly by a member called Herbert Geen.  Since that time, the club has always been looking to develop progressively, and in 1990 floodlights were installed.

It has always been the club's policy to encourage junior members. The club is partnered with the Torridge School of Tennis. Children are encouraged to start their tennis at the age of 4 in "mini tennis", they then progress through the junior coaching groups, join the junior club, senior club and finally represent the club in our many teams in the North Devon league. Today, the club has over 120 adult members and 120 juniors. Currently, we have a waiting list for children where the average wait is one year to access our coaching. We also have a tennis partnership link with local schools to use our courts for matches, tournaments, etc.

We have a successful competitive section with five men's and five ladies' teams in the north devon league and several junior teams in the national junior club league. We could field more teams, but are limited by court space. In May each year, we hold an LTA tournament which is one of the largest in Devon, attracting over 360 entries from all over the country, and which is a great boost for the local economy for the duration of the event.

Westward Ho! Tennis Club has long been recognised as the premier club in North Devon. the new Tarka Tennis Centre in barnstaple has raised the profile of tennis in North Devon, with greater participation. Cost and location have, however, limited the accessibility for residents of torridge, and the club believes it has a duty to ensure that the best facilities are available for all.

The proposed new indoor facility will support much needed facilities for squash, badminton and table tennis, along with both indoor and outdoor tennis courts. it is intended that the club will remain a private members club, but within its Community Amateur Sports Club status, ensuring accessibility and affordability for all. The club's ambitious plans provide a huge opportunity for all sport racket enthusiasts within Torridge.

The club has identified two potential sites - Silford Road and Tadworthy Road - and seeks your comments and feedback on which you feel is the most appropriate location for the new racket centre.

Please see future of club page for further information - the questionnaire regarding the proposed development can be downloaded from the downloads page.
